Algarve has become an international venue for some of the top sport events in the world. With its numerous facilities and prestigious weather, Algarve comprises perfect conditions for the practice of very distinct sports.
For the months of April and May, a number of major sport events are taking place in the Algarve.
If you’re a motorcycle fan, you should know that the best riders on two wheels are going to compete at the MotoGP World Championship in the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve between the 16th and the 18th of April.
On the other hand, if you prefer car races, the Formula 1 Portugal Grand Prix is taking place between the 30th of April and the 2nd of May at the Portimão Circuit as well.
Algarve will also host the Portugal Masters, a famous professional golf tournament of the European Circuit. It is going to be held at the prestigious Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, as it has been since 2007.
The 47th Volta ao Algarve is scheduled from the 5th to the 9th of May. The route extends over 765 km, split across five stages. The race starts in Lagos and ends right at the top of the Malhão, the highest mountain top of central Algarve. This is an important early-season race for the best cyclists in the World Tour and arguably a performance not to be missed.
Algarve will also shelter sailing events from the 10th of May until the beginning of July. There will be several international competitions, such as “Campeonato da Europa de Finn” and “Warm-up Regatta 470”, living up to the fantastic conditions Algarve has to offer either for nautical tourism and water sports.
